Trishanku was a famous king of suryavansh.His son was Harishchandra.He was so truthful and religious that all GODS felt jealousy about his fame.Lord Indra provoked Maharshi Vishwamitra to take Harishchandra’s test.He agreed and showed him a dream in which King Harishchandra was giving his complete Kingdom as a gift to Maharshi Vishwamitra.Next day Maharshi Vishwamitra reached Ayodhya and asked his Kingdom.The King agreed,and gave whole kingdom to Maharshi Vishwamitra.
King Harishchandra was the King of the whole Earth,and he had given the whole Kingdom as a gift so He thought”It is not right to live on gifted place.”So he went to Kashi with his wife and son,because it is described in Purann that Kashi is laying on Lord Shiva’s Trishool,so though it is on the Earth it assumed that it is located to different place.
While he was going,Maharshi Vishwamitra said”Any gift is not fruitful if some cash gift {Dakshina}is not given with it.So you give me,one thousand gold coins.”
King Harishchandra had no money,he had already given everything,so he asked for some time,and went to Kashi.He sold his wife Sheivya to a Brahmin,his son Rohitashv was a little boy,So he requested the brahmin to allow him with his mother.He agreed to keep him.He sold himself to a “Chaandaal”{The man who does funerals and owner of the funeral place}
Now Maharani Sheivya started as maid in Brahmin’s house,and Harishchandra started to guard the”Smashaan”{The place of funeral}His work was to take money from those people who had brought a dead body for funeral.
One day Prince Rohitashv was plucking flowers he got hurt by snake bite,and immediately he fell dead.Maharani Sheivya had no one to console,and no one to help her taking the dead body to the funeral place.She herself took the dead body,she had no cloth to cover his body.When she was going to do the funeral,Harishchandra came there and asked money for it.Sheivya was weeping,she said”He is your son,and I have nothing to give you,”King was sad,but he said”I am here only a servant,my master wants me to take money from everyone who comes here for funeral,so I can’t allow you to do the funeral,without money.”
Sheiya started weeping hard,she said”I have got only this “saree”{Indian Woman’s dress}I can give you half of it to you,as she was about to tear the saree,GOD Narayan,Indra,Dharmraj,and Maharshi Vishwamitra appeared there.Vishwamitra said”Prince Rohitashv is not dead.The Owner of the Funeral Place was “Dharmraj”.
“Truth”is like Narayan.and with its effect Harishchandra and Sheivya went to heaven,and Rohitashv became the king of Ayodhya.
