Leela—19
Those days Our house construction work was on as I told you all perlekar’s came to Indore with their share 2500 Rs.Only and My father also bought a plot with his elder brother’s suggestion,He was Ramkrishna Perlekar and was an overseer in Government construction and knew very well about construction so Under his supervision the work was being done.
Mummy started doing tuitions there about 12 girls used to come our home in the evening to learn English.I remember some of the girls’ names, they were Tarulata,Chanda,Bibban,Rani,Shakila.I used to go to Rani’s house as they had have milk dairy ,and I brought butter milk from her house.Chanda I remembered just because once she brought mehandi from her house and made a beautiful design on my Palm ,just them Sulbha arrived there and she made a design on her palm too,I felt so jealous that I started crying loudly without speaking single word.I was just 5 year old and this is all happened before Bably’s birth. Most of the money was going for the construction of the house. We used to buy new clothes once or twice in a year.School fee was very less those days,I remembered in government school it was 20 Paise per month.
I had never seen Leela ,attracted towards any saree or any new ornaments ,or going to see movies.I saw her reading novels every night. She was so good that she was always ready to help others ,for that extra efforts to any extant were done by her if necessary. In Indore Sumati Bai and Jaya Gauri were two widows { in childhood } were very much inspired by her co-operation ,later on Jaya Gauri became Lecturer in Indore’s renowned college.I remember while she came to our house,Mummy said with smile”Guru Gud rah gaya aur Chela cheeni ho gaya”In Mandsaur ,Our landlady’s son in law was just a higher secondary passed young man but because of Leela’s efforts he got a teacher’s job in Government School. We have had very good relations with many people there concerning teachers mostly, and we used to visit them while invited. Some maharashtriyan familes, some Bengali teachers ,Jain,Muslims all.She used to go to the market for shopping after school and come with heavy bags full of weekly vegetables, fruits ,biscuits for me ,later on we started getting biscuits backed from a bakery.Me and Sulbha both used to go to that bakery, holding wheat flour ,butter, ghee, sugar ,and get the biscuits within one hour ,very delicious ,and in different shapes of our own choice,Tajmahal, bird, owl,Lion etc.It was great fun. While she was transferred from Mandsaur as Principal to a new interior place named Sitamau, every body was weeping at the bus stand,They honoured her with lots of gifts and a Praise letter, the title was”Angel of Mercy”and lots of things were described in it ,but the first sentence was “Gaagar me saagar naa samaaye”.Many years we took care of it.We might not keep the things safe, but memories never die.
