Ayodhya’s King Dilip had no child.He was a Chakrvarti{All smaller kings surrender to him}King.Once he had been to Maharshi Vashishth’s Aashram{A place quite far away from town where all the Rishi,Maharshi used to live and do holy events like Yagya,Pooja and teach their shishy{Students}and prayed to him for a child.Maharshi ,came to know through meditation,that why the King is not blessed with a child yet.He said”While You were coming from heaven to earth after meeting Lord Indra,Kaamdhenu{GOD’s Cow}was standing on the way and you did not wish her,so she had cursed you that you will not get a son unless you serve her {next genration}all cows on the earth are called her {next generation}.
King Dilip said”All cows are Kamdhenu’s next generation ,so I will serve them”
Maharshi said”A cow named Nandini is in my Aashram,and she is Kamdhenu’s daughter,so you serve her.”King Dilip agreed.
From next day onwards he started following Nandini.She went to the forest,The King followed her,The King walked while she walked and stopped while she stopped.He drank water only after her drinking.He did not allow even a fly to sit on her body.In the evening when she goes back to Ashram,The King also followed back to Aashram.The queen used to Pray and worshiped Nandini,and lit a lamp near Nandini,every night,The King used to sleep in that place near the cow,He served her for a month,very carefully,It was the last day of the month,The King stopped watching some beautiful flowers,and Nandini went ahead ,within some moments he heard her mew with fear,he went running and saw that one big lion was sitting there,Nandini was in his possession.The King wanted to kill the Lion with his Bow and arrow,but when he tried to take out the arrow,his hand got stuck.He was surprised,because the Lion was speaking in human voice”Your honour,I am not an ordinary Lion.I am Lord Shiva’s servant.Now you can go back,One must leave the work which can not be done by him.”I am hungry,I will eat this cow”
King Dilip said politely “You are Lord Shiva’s Servant,so I wish you with respect,talking to respected people effects us.You have introduced yourself,now do me a favour,Please leave the cow and instead of her you eat me.”The Lion tried to make the King understand that just for a cow one Chakravarti King must not sacrifice his life,If he live alive he can have thousands of cows and take care of them.King Dilip did not accept this,so at last the Lion got ready to leave the cow instead of the King,King’s hand got freed,he bowed his head infront of the Lion,He was waiting for his attack,but it started pouring flowers from the sky,Nandini was speaking in human voice”Please Get up your honour,there is no Lion here,I was just testing you,now you take some milk in a leaf pot ,and drink it ,you will have a meritorious son,The King said”Your calf has the first right on your milk,and after that,I can take some milk to “Guru”and only with his permission I will have some.He did the same,He had a meritorious son after some time.
