Jacobin Cuckoo –CHATAK
According to Indian mythology it has a beak atop its head and it thirsts for the rains. The poet Kalidasa used it in his “”Meghdoota” and this tradition continues in literary works. in Bengal, the bird associated with the “chatak” of Sanskrit was unlike the Jacobin cuckoo suggested by European orientalists. It is said she drinks water only from dew and spray picked up from plant leaves , that it may have been the basis of the idea that the “chataka” drinks water only from raindrops
An old lady Janaki was living in a village with her daughter and daughter in law.Her son and husband were working in town and used to come there only to spend holidays.The lady had have farm field and for that she had have two bulls also.
Her daughter Rukhmini was a lazy girl and never liked helping in work in field and in house hold as well,But daughter in law Vidya was very sober, obedient and doing all works with great devotion.Both of them were of same age and Janki always treated same way,She neither favoured Rukhmini nor Vidya.
It was very Hot out side ad it was May month.Both the bulls were thirsty and there was no enough water at home,What to do ?Janki was thinking seriously and she didnot want to do any Partiality,so one idea clicked in her mind she said ,”I am cooking delicious Kheer{Rice Pudding} ,both of you go taking one bull each to the pond and help the bull drinking water ,who ever will come faster will get two bowls full pudding and another one will get a single bowl full.They hold the strings of each bull and walked out.Vidya was going by the regular path they used to go.Rukhmini said,”I will go by short cut path through narrow path beneath the farms.So she diverted ,but she did not go much ahead,She thought ,”Let me go home and eat Rice pudding two bowls full,Mother will not know whether the bull is thirsty or he has drunk water.So she reached home and said I went faster and so came earlier.She started eating the Rice Pudding.The bull was thirsty could not speak ,he fell down and died,While dying he looked Rukhmini and cursed her,”As I am dying thirsty You will be thirsty for ever,Rukhmini immediately turned into bird Chatak and she can see water in river,pond or any where but she only can drink rain drops falling in the {Swati Nakshtra} her chirping says”sarga sarga pani de”{O Lord of heaven give me water} !!!
