Surya was married to Samjna ,Vishvakarma’s daughter,She was more beautiful and powerful than her husband.Surya and Samjna had three children Manu,Yama and Yamuna.After some years it was not possible for Samjna to to bear her husband’s radiation,so she decided to go back to her father’s home,and left her Chhaaya for husband’s company.Later Surya and Chhaaya also had have a son.
Chhaaya was step mother so she paid more attention to her own son and love and care more to her own son.Manu accepted the situation but Yama revolted and threatened Chhaaya with his foot,Chhaaya cursed her ,”Let that foot of your’s fall”Yama went to his father and requested to revert the curse.After listening every thing Surya realised that Chhaaya can not be Yama’s mother,He grasps Chhaaya by hair and commanded her to tell the truth and she narrated every thing about her own creation,Surya went immediately to Vishvkarma to meet Samjna,Vishvkarma redused Surya’s radiation.Surva could only save Yama’s life but could not save him from Mutilation and so Yama became God of Death.
While he was sent to the Underworld his twin sister Yamuna was weeping.Watching her despair Gods decided to turn her into Yamini ,Goddess of night,her tears became river Yamuna.
She invited her brother Yama on this day.Yamraj asked her to wish.She wished blessing for every mortal,It is said that on this day a Holy dip in Yamuna pleases Lord Yamraj and he blesses our brothers.
